Martin Buenting
Good morning from Louisiana,
Nice talking with you last week. I will try and write a few things to share with the relatives that I remember growing up in Pomeroy.
Mom’s big garden, so plenty of fresh veggies. Neighbors kids getting together to play ball or at night playing hide and seek or kick the can. How many still do that? Detasseling in the summer. Babysitting for 25 cents an hour, 50 cents after midnight. WOW! This was in the 50’s. Summer vacation Bible school in the basement of the old St. Johns church. Marlene, remember picking the wild flowers walking up your long lane. The time I stayed over at Uncle Louie and Aunt Alice and finding out the names the cousins had for their cows.
Growing up in Pomeroy when there was a theater and 4 grocery stores! You could go to the drug store and get a coke for 5 cents and look through comic books at the magazine rack or go to Hakeman’s Five and Dime and get a nickels worth of candy. Wednesday nights , the band concerts down town.
Different memories for our family because of ages. LuVerne left for the Army on Dan”s first birthday, Loren left for the Army the day I was confirmed and David left the day LuVerne and Pat had their first child. I was in junior high when Corrine and Lloyd got married. Dan was 7 and a half when I got married. So, you can see we all have different memories of growing up in Pomeroy.
One more, going to Grandma Buenting’s home after school and having tea and cookies with her.
